Thanks for stopping by this site. I am truly honored to have you here. This lesson, “Starting a Family” was written to share with you some proven principles by which you can establish a strong long-lasting family. With divorce rates very high in many places and the lack of counseling and teaching before marriage, the young family faces tremendous obstacles. It is my sincerest desire to drop a nugget of truth into your life in the hopes that it will be a blessing to your family.
The Traditional Family is Under Siege
Since the early 1960’s many things have been introduced or implemented into our society that oppose the family. Actually, some were started earlier than this and have had a profound effect on families everywhere. Since the sixties the family has been eroded and undermined by an anti-God atheistic agenda promoted primarily by governments and Hollywood. If you desire a strong family it is vital that you be aware of these potential dangers. In this lesson I have chosen just two examples of potential dangers for today’s families.
Danger Number One
Danger number one is the anti-family influence of the public school system. Since the sixties introduction of sex education, humanistic morality and anti-Christian teachings the structure and foundation of the family began to crumble. Teenage pregnancy, the proliferation of STD’s and violence has climbed steadily to the undermining of the family. An example of this can be found in a list of school problems in the 1940’s verses the 1980’s.
In his book, “The Battle For The Family”, Author Tim LaHaye page 89 gives us this list. In 1940 the problems in school were truancy, running in the halls, talking out in class, unfinished homework, loitering after school, unreturned library books, chewing gum in class, talking during study hall, broken windows and graffiti on walls. In the 1980’s it was violence, stealing, forcible rape, teacher abuse, knives and guns, vandalism, wanton destruction of property, arson, rebellion against authority and gang warfare. See what I mean?
Today, the public school system of Washington D.C. boasts of an illiteracy rate of thirty percent. Although this isn’t something to boast of, it is all too typical of schools all across our country. Families are feeling the pressure when their children are bombarded with rebellion and immorality on a daily basis. Some rebellion in the home can be directly linked to the atmosphere at the public school. What is the answer? Do your best to put your child through a private or Christian school where the principles of morality and decency are still taught. Get involved and know what your child does on a daily basis.
Question #1 Do you feel the same way about our public school system?
Danger number two
Danger number two is the influence of Hollywood and television viewing on the family. Much if not all of modern Hollywood is against the family. Hollywood projects all that is immoral and perverse as the right thing to do while you, as a parent, are attempting to teach a message of restraint and moral conduct. Does it make sense to teach your child one thing and allow them to watch the exact opposite? The rise of infidelity and other moral acts can be directly attributed to the programming of such on T.V.
In addition, the incidents of attention disorders can be attributed in some cases to television watching. The fast moving screens cause a disorder whereby the child cannot focus on one thing for very long. This not only affects the children but parents as well. A good plan of action is to eliminate, as many have, this influence in your home. Can you imagine not having a television? Would you be able to communicate with your family better? Would you have more time for quality activities?
Question #2 Can you think of a television program that undermines the family?
Building a Strong Family
Building a strong family involves a plan. That plan needs to have some components built into it that are based on achieving success. One of the greatest needs in the family today is the ability to have interpersonal relationships.
Communication is very important. I would like to suggest going through the study “Communication the Foundation of Relationships” to find more help in this area. Suffice it to say, communication is very important for a healthy family. Husband/wife and parent/child communication are key to success. Money, material possessions or location are second to communication. Happiness is not found in what you have but whom you are with. When you understand and love your spouse great obstacles can be overcome and the family remains strong.
Get Debt Free
Staying clear of debt is very important to establishing a strong family. The average American spends more than he takes in. Debt is an accepted practice. I would like to recommend the lesson in the Bible Study section entitled “What Does the Bible Say About- Borrowing Money”. This lays out from a Biblical perspective the dangers of debt. Did you know that 50% of marriages which fail, do so because of debt or money issues?
A strong bottom line will go far in relieving stress and worry in your family. If you have to live a more simple life, then do it for the sake of your family’s future. Also, we may have a Biblical Financial Class in your area for you and your wife to attend which will help you to understand Gods’ Financial principles in your life.
The Importance of a Church Family
The old saying, “A family that prays together, stays together” has much truth in it. A well-known Attorney General stated that he had never seen a child in court who was raised in Sunday School. It is a well-known fact that where you go as a family has a tremendous impact on it. While church has been given a negative spin by the modern media the benefits of going to church are tremendous. With a godly pastor and friends who are concerned about you, your family can make it through any time of trouble.
Question #3 Would you be interested in knowing where there is a church family in your area?
The material I have presented here is very basic. I hope it has sparked an interest for you to learn more. Building a strong family takes time and effort and there is nothing like a family where love prevails and the peace of God rules. Fighting and violence seem to be the norm for many today. However, there is a better way. A happy family can be a reality for you. For additional help check out two other studies titled “Building Up Your Lady” and “Building Up Your Man”. There are a number of great ideas to help you in your family relationships.
