“The lesson on ‘the power of the tongue” was very useful indeed. I had spent a lot of time searching through the internet looking for helpful resources but this is certainly the best for me.”
The comment above came from someone who went through the study entitled “The Power of the Tongue”. Thanks for the encouraging words! The tongue is a powerful instrument which can be used for good or bad. The Word of God the Bible tells us that life and death are in the power of the tongue.
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” Proverbs 18:21 (KJV)
Too often all of us say things that we wish were left unsaid. This is because the tongue is an unruly member of our body.
“Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.” James 3:5-6 (KJV)
In the Bible this little red devil behind the white pearly gates gets little good press and when you examine it even further each of us are left with little hope to get it under control.
“But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.” James 3:8 (KJV)
Thank God we have an answer and a way to freedom in this area of life. God in his wisdom and foreknowledge promised all of us a way to freedom from a destructive tongue. Isaiah spoke of this experience.
“For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.” Isaiah 28:11-12 (KJV)
This prophesy came to pass on the day of Pentecost which was the birthday of the New Testament church.
“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:4 (KJV)
God gave them a heavenly power to overcome the tendencies of our flesh. The power of the Holy Ghost can give each of us what we need to control our tongue and use it to build up instead of tearing down. All of us have failed in this area and have hurt those that we love and my prayer is that God will help us to be filled with his Spirit to the point that we can use our tongue for good instead of evil.
