What Do You Desire?

Home Page PictureIt is the nature of desire not to be satisfied, and most men live only for the gratification of it.”   Aristotle (384 BC – 322 BC), In Stobaeus, Florilegium

He who desires is always poor.”   Claudianus

Desire, an interesting word.  Webster defines it as: To long for; to covet.  The Word of God says it is: a longing for something.  Whatever the definition, desire by it’s very nature proves that we are in need of something we don’t have.  This is the true state of all people and the very reason we have the problems we face today.  Don’t misunderstand me, desire has brought about many great inventions that have revolutionized the world but when desire is solely for the gratification of self it becomes a destructive force.

If we look at ourselves and the position in which we all stand it becomes very clear why we desire things.  First on the list is the fact that we are flesh.  This in itself shows that we are limited and powerless to do many things.  Second we are limited in our knowledge.  We don’t have enough light on the subject to see clearly and make the right decisions.  Thirdly we are selfish by nature.  The very reason we see the troubles of our day is because of the negative power of selfishness.

I’m sure you can add some things to the list as well.  We all can, but when we do immediately the question arises, “What can we do about it”?  Where can we find help in these areas of weakness?  The only answer I have found is to tap into a source that will help in these areas of weakness.  That source is God and his Word.  Look at the three examples above.  The Bible tells us that God is everything we need.

Consider this, the first on the list is that we are flesh and weak.  The Bible says “God is a Spirit…” John 4:24 (KJV) and able to do anything!

Next we  are limited in knowledge.  The Bible speaks of God in this area too.  “…God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” 1 John 1:5 (KJV)  “Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God…” 1 Tim. 1:17 (KJV)

Thirdly, we are basically selfish by nature.  To counter this the Word of God says this.  “…God is love.” 1 John 4:8 (KJV)

To put it as clearly as possible I would have to say that everything we need, HE IS!  In fact that’s exactly what he said about himself.

“And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.” Exodus 3:14 (KJV)

Whatever we need he said “I AM”!

Do you need healing, salvation, personal deliverance?  He said “I AM”.  What a comforting truth!  Whatever we need we can find it in Jesus Christ and his Holy Word.  Why not try talking to him about your troubles?  I’m sure he will be glad to help you.
